Project Value
JAYDO was awarded the Rodds Drain Upgrade works as part of the Taylors Rd widening works, working closely with Melbourne Water. The project will allow the widening and upgrade of Taylors Rd, a crucial link in the development of the roads and waterways of the surrounding industrial area.
The scope of works included upgrade of the existing live drain, to be replaced with nearly 300 lineal metres of 1800 x 1500 & 2700 x 1500 culverts, on a structural culvert slab nearly 10m wide, along with drainage pipes at 300dia to 825dia, concrete pits, and over 2,000m² of Melbourne Water rock beaching.
key challenges
The job was constructed within the existing live waterway, which carries a significant amount of water from the upstream catchments including many housing estates and wetlands. To manage the water flows, a diversion waterway was excavated to bypass the water, along with pumps where required. The channel was
then backfilled to level 1 specification under supervision.
Another major challenge was poor ground conditions being in a waterway. The existing clay was too soft and failed to meet requirements for the slab, so ground improvements were completed under the entire slab length, which consisted of excavating over 600mm and rebuilding a subgrade with rubble, geofab and FCR to meet bearing capacity.
Project Outcomes
This challenging project was successfully completed on time and on budget, and now carries water flows from a large upstream catchment, allowing Mainfreight access to their new large scale factory site.
