Gippsland Water contracted JAYDO to replace 5km of existing DN200 MSCL pipeline which runs along the Strzelecki Highway, stretching from the Mirboo North Water Treatment Plant into town of Mirboo North. The existing watermain was 75 years old and was experiencing several failures which resulted in costly repairs and increased health and safety risks for Gippsland Water due to the proximity of the main to the highway.

The major scope of works included:

  • Installation of 4.1km DN280 PN20 pipeline by open cut and HDD methods
  • Installation of 400mm of DN110 PN20 branch main
  • Slip line of 900m DN63 PE pipeline through existing DN200 MSCL pipeline
  • 7x property connections
  • Installation of 11x branch connections
  • Installation of 11x air valve & 9x scour valve pits
  • Decommissioning of an existing pipe bridge across the Little Morwell River

key challenges

  • The pipeline was installed through private land, golf course fairways, nature reserves, the Vic Roads Highway and within the town of Mirboo North with limited access
  • Ensuring minimal impact to Mirboo North Golf Course whilst installing 800m of pipeline
  • Multiple HDD crossings under roads and creeks
  • Working adjacent to live power lines and traffic
