MID 2030 Newry Pipeline

MID 2030 Newry Pipeline

Maffra, Vic

Project Duration

October 2022 to December 2023

Client

Southern Rural Water

Project Value

$ 38m

Jaydo was awarded the Newry Pipeline Project by Southern Rural Water involving the construction of approximately 20km of mainline and spur pipeline to facilitate modernisation of the existing open-channel irrigation network.

The projects scope of works included:

  • Construction of approximately 20km of mainline and spur pipeline, with diameters ranging
    from DN1200 to DN300
  • Construction of the following number of crossings:
    – 7 No. Waterway Crossings
    – 20 No. Road Crossings
  • Installation of numerous fittings assemblies including:
    – 37 No. Scour Outlet
    – 40 No. Air Valve Assemblies
    – 56 No. Customer Outlets
  • The construction of a large inlet structure at the start of the pipeline

key ici outcomes

A key project requirement was to construct and commission the pipeline within the winter shutdown period. This was successfully achieved by Jaydo, through the direct employment of Gippsland locals, which on this project included 51 of 63 long term project staff, in addition to the employment of Gippsland locals from surrounding areas.

Project MPSG requirements were also exceeded, with 11,205 hours out of 75,297 project hours allocated to trainees, apprentices & cadets, thus representing a total MPSG commitment of 14.88% and therefore exceeding the tender requirement of 10%.

key challenges

A requirement to adhere to the project timeline of works completion during the winter shutdown period provided several challenges:

  • Negotiation of landowner access agreements during the winter shutdown period was a significant challenge to the works crew
  • Access into paddocks during the winter months, particularly in the way of bringing in construction material
  • Handling and construction of large diameter pipe
  • Management of multiple work fronts across a spread-out project footprint
  • On-going design changes during delivery to satisfy landowner requirements

key innovations

  • Jaydo worked with Southern Rural Water on escalation mitigation strategies, following a significant increase in the cost of PE pipe during tender. The solution put forward and ultimately constructed was
GRP pipe in large diameter pipe sections, with SRW opting for construction of small diameter pipe section in PE to minimise the extent of design changes. The process of changing pipe material yielded its own complexities, with Jaydo having to engineer a solution to satisfy pipeline design requirements, relating to native soil modulus.
  • Direct employment of Gippsland locals – 51 of 63 personnel – were based in Gippsland, with majority specifically employed for this project. This was a first for Jaydo, given that our delivery model has always been to self-perform projects with our own internal resources. This has provided Jaydo with the
required strategy to implement on future regional jobs/projects.
