Lara Sewer Pump Station

Lara Sewer Pump Station

Lara, Vic

Project Duration

February to June 2016

Client

Department of Justice / Barwon Water

Project Value

$ 2.1m

The Barwon Prison Precinct originally treated all sewage and wastewater on-site via the Barwon Prison Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Following the proposal of Kareenga – a new 300 bed prison facility – it was identified that the existing WWTP did not have sufficient capacity to treat further wastewater and sewage. The solution involved the construction of an off-site wastewater treatment facility located adjacent to the existing treatment plant. The works required the design and construction of a new Sewage Pump Station (SPS) and Sewage Rising Main (SRM) of length 10km, which JAYDO was contracted to deliver.

The Lara Sewer Pump Station project included:

  • Design and construction of Aquatec precast 3.2m diameter wet well to the depth of 7m (with
    internal epoxy coating)
  • Installation of 2x 32kW submersible pump sets
  • Installation of 4x Aquatec 240kL emergency storage vessels
  • Construction of 7x DN1500 maintenance holes ranging in depths from 2m to 5.3m
  • Construction of valve and flowmeter pits, in addition to installation of mag flowmeter and associated valves
  • Design, supply and installation of chemical dosing facility
  • Ventilation fan, ductwork and vents installation
  • All associated electrical and mechanical works

key challenges

  • Large scale excavations was required to install the four storage vessels, which required extensive planning of crane lifts and detailed procedures in order to correctly install the 240kl vessels
  • A tight project timeline, with delivery of the project fast tracked to meet the opening of the new Kareenga Prison

project outcomes

  • All works were completed and fully operational prior to the end of June 2016, in time for the openings of the Kareenga Prison facility in July 2016
  • Both the SRM and SPS components of the Barwon Prison Precinct Wastewater Infrastructure Upgrade were completed on budget and to schedule, to the satisfaction of the client
