The existing Highton watermain, built in 1946, services the Geelong CBD and surrounding suburbs. Jaydo was awarded the Highton Feeder Main Replacement project by Barwon Water, with the scope of work involving immediate replacement of a section of the vital watermain.
Approximately 290m of the original DN600 pipework is to be replaced with OD813 MSCL, with the alignment constructed in a way so as the majority of the original pipework could remain buried.
In addition to the pipeline, a bypass/scour assembly was installed on the Highton Feeder Main system approximately 3km further downstream to enable better isolation and control to Barwon Water operations.
key challenges
- Significant ingress of ground water during construction and unstable excavations provided key challenges for the crew, in addition to working with and handling contaminated soils, category C and asbestos coated pipe.
- Further connections beneath the James Harrison Bridge provided challenging due to restricted access and existing vertical connections.
