Grant St SPS Upgrade

Grant St SPS Upgrade

Bacchus Marsh, Vic

Project Duration

February 2020 to August 2021

Client

Greater Western Water

Project Value

$ 5.2m

JAYDO was engaged by Greater Western Water for the upgrade of the Grant Street Sewer Pump Station (SPS) to meet forecast growth requirements in the Bacchus Marsh area. The project more than doubled the capacity of the pump station, increasing from 37 litres to in excess of 100 litres per second, therefore  decommissioning the existing SPS. The delivery of the new pump station required the installation of a Horizontal Direction Drilled (HDD) sewer bypass to enable the installation of two underground storage tanks, pumps and an above ground electrical cabinet.

The Grant Street SPS project was part of a larger package of works to upgrade the water network within Bacchus Marsh, including sewer pipeline and watermain upgrades, both also delivered by Jaydo under separate packages.

key challenges

  • Working within an operating facility, needing to maintain a clean, safe and productive working facility
  • Sewer bypasses beside Werribee River
  • The project was delivered through the COVID-19 pandemic, under heavy state, national and international restrictions, so design changes were made to minimise the importation of certain components
  • Working within a restricted construction footprint surrounded by housing, waterways and existing sewer systems

Key innovations

Due to site restrictions and the large size of required shafts, Jaydo and Greater Western Water worked together to reach design solutions to enable the project to progress in a safe and practicable manner, including:

  • Changed the wet well design from caisson shaft to secant piled wall, reducing the need for importing the components during the pandemic, as well as being able to successfully install on an extremely tight
    construction footprint
  • Used HDD methods to construct deep interconnecting pipework between the structures
