Centre Road Water Main Renewals Project

Centre Road Water Main Renewals Project

Clayton, Vic

Project Duration

October 2018 to June 2019

Client

South East Water

Project Value

$ 4.2m

The Centre Road Water Main Renewals Project was delivered as part of JAYDO’s participation in the South East Water Pipes & Structures Program.

The main scope of works included renewal of a 450m section of DN750 MSCL pipe along the westbound carriageway of Centre Road, a busy thoroughfare of the Clayton community precinct. The team delivered a new DN630 PE pipe through the existing main, with additional scope including the renewal of 900m of existing DN150 AC reticulation mains on the north and south sides of Centre Road, all using slip lining techniques. This was completed for 38x service connections and 8x mains connections.

The intent of the project was to improve operation performance, given recent failures along the main and its significance to the South East Water network where these pipelines are transferring water between Notting Hill Reservoir and Moorabbin storage.

key challenges

  • Being within a busy precinct of Clayton, the project required significant community engagement throughout delivery, it was essential business owners and residents were informed of all planned works
  • The works required complex traffic management set ups and approvals from council and Vic Roads prior to implementation

Key Innovations

  • The investigation of slip lining techniques to deliver the project, in lieu of a lift and relay approach, to prevent impact of the hydraulic performance with pipework of a smaller diameter and minimised the
    construction footprint
  • Stakeholder engagement processes and delivery of information to the community, particularly in areas of built-up works
  • Staging of shutdown works to minimise impact on works resources (provision of adequate rest for water authority operations and construction crews)
