The Canning Street Water Main Renewal project involved the design and construction of a 2.5km DN750 drinking water main along Canning St and Park St in Carlton, Victoria, to replace the existing and failing 140 year old DN450 main along Nicholson St.
The scope of works included:
- 2.2km of OD 813 MSCL open cut along Canning St
- 200m of OD 502 MSCL open cut along Park St
- 2no. trenchless sections at approximately 40m each, under Princes St and Elgin St
- 6x cross connections
- Connection to the M160 Melbourne Water main
- 130m of slip lining inside a DN450 main
- Decommissioning over 2km of DN450 main along Nicholson St
key challenges
- Works were delivered within a narrow corridor with a high traffic location
- The proximity to a high-pressure gas main coupled with complicated quality assurance and shutdown requirements made the installation extremely difficult, through liaison with Melbourne Water and
City West Water a successful installation was achieved through a limited shutdown window
Key innovations
- Stakeholder engagement was a critical component of this project. A software tool, Consultation Manager, was used to record all resident and stakeholder interactions to keep track of communication history, obtain contact information and determine trends in these interactions. By the end of the project, more than 1,500 interactions were recorded.
- A dedicated Stakeholder Engagement Officer was bought on full time to the project to liaise directly with the 500+ local residents and any concerns or issues they may have had.
- A well-established tree was identified as an environmental concern so to mitigate any risks to the tree, a trenchless methodology was adopted to allow works to pass the tree whilst ensuring its safety and health.
