2022/23 Sediment Pond Desilts

Project Duration

2022/23 Summer Season

Client

Melbourne Water

Project Value

$ 775k

Jaydo was engaged to deliver Melbourne Water’s Desilt Program over the 2022/23 summer season. The overall works were to remove sediment pond desilt across Melbourne Water’s wetlands to support their stormwater systems, this included dewatering each of the ponds and managing the inlet water flows, removing all sediment and reinstating as per original condition.

key challenges

  • Wetland flooding and soft ground conditions caused difficult site access for Jaydo’s machinary. To prevent this and to reach the centre of the ponds, steel plates were used to create a safe working platform.
  • Limited stockpile and drying areas
  • Strict controls had to be followed at a number of locations due to environmental issues and protection of fish species.
  • Permits needed to be sourced from the local Councils and stakeholders.
  • Due to a lot of the wetland locations being in built up areas, traffic and pedestrian management was a high priority.

key innovations

  • Steel plates were used to access the centre of the ponds and to create a safe working platform for our machinery, by preventing them from becoming stuck in the soft clay
    liner of the sediment ponds.
  • Specialised tilt hitch excavators and rubber track dump trucks were used for low ground pressure applications.
