Lara Sewer Rising Main

Lara Sewer Rising Main

Lara, Vic

Project Duration

February to June 2016

Client

Department of Justice / Barwon Water

Project Value

$ 1.3m

The Barwon Prison Precinct originally treated all sewage and wastewater on-site via the Barwon Prison Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Following the proposal of Kareenga – a new 300 bed prison facility – it was identified that the existing WWTP did not have sufficient capacity to treat further wastewater and sewage. The solution involved the construction of an off-site wastewater treatment facility located adjacent to the existing treatment plant. The works required the design and construction of a new Sewage Pump Station (SPS) and Sewage Rising Main (SRM) of length 10km, which JAYDO was contracted to deliver.

The Lara Sewer Rising Main was constructed from the new Sewer Pump Station site to the receiving manhole in Corio, approximately 10km away.

The main construction activities involved in the scope of works included:

  • 9.3km OD180 PE water main by open cut methods
  • 434m OD180 PE water main by trenchless methods
  • Supply and installation of multiple air valve and scour assemblies
  • Connections into existing main lines

key challenges

With the majority of the pipeline sitting along the edge of existing roads and crossing multiple driveways, continuous communication was required with local stakeholders and residents to ensure minimal delays were encountered.

Project outcomes

  • Despite encountering significant amounts of rock on the sewer pump station project, Jaydo successfully laid over 9km of OD180 rising main within 4 weeks, averaging 500m per day
  • Over 30x air valves and scour valves assemblies were successfully installed in parallel with the pipeline construction, ensuring the works were completed on time for the opening of the new Kareenga Prison
  • Both the SRM & SPS components of the Barwon Water Prison Precinct Wastewater Infrastructure Upgrade were completed on budget and to schedule, to the satisfaction of the client
