The Wallan Branch Sewer Realignment project involves the construction of new sewer infrastructure for Yarra Valley Water to support future growth and development in the Wallan area. Works include the installation of a DN525 GRP sewer pipeline, cast-in-situ maintenance holes and associated property connections, delivering critical wastewater infrastructure to service the expanding community.
Construction activities were carefully planned around restricted access conditions, including limited use of a residential driveway to maintain progress while minimising disruption to nearby residents.
Key high-risk activities included deep trenching, trench shield installation and operation, pipe installation, dewatering and plant movements through constrained access points.
key challenges
- Ground conditions were significantly wetter and softer than indicated in the available geotechnical information
- The project required ongoing coordination with Yarra Valley Water, Winslow/DTP, adjacent developers and local residents to manage access changes, partial site handovers and remaining remediation
works. Nearby property developments and DTP works all had competing interests over the same works easement. - Limited site access resulting in import/export logistical challenges
- Quality issues, integrating Jaydo installed pipeline with adjacent works completed by others (property developers)
key innovations
- Battery powered jumping jack – trialling and utilising an enviro friendly and safer option that has been extremely effective and will transfer onto other jobs
- Utilising water cart to free trench shields – spraying water down sides of shields before lifting to make clay slippery and release pressure on the shields, originally 2x 36t couldn’t move the shields
value for money
- Jaydo committed to commence and progress with the works under limited notice and a myriad of construction and time constraints. We ensured that issues presented were proactively managed without holding up progress to mitigate the potential delay impacts on the project costs.
