Somers WRP Upgrade

Somers WRP Upgrade

Somers, Vic

Project Duration

April 2021 to January 2022

Client

South East Water

Project Value

$ 8.2m

This project was delivered as part of South East Water’s delivery program and involved the installation of additional storage at the Somers Water Recycling Plant (WRP), delivered in the form of sludge lagoons and drying pans. The works included installation of new pumping facilities and piping networks to integrate the new storage within the existing facilities. Works delivered through various stages to allow South East Water to continue utilising parts of the plant as required.

South East Water now have critical storage capacity within their treatment plant along with new transfer pipework between multiple facilities enabling efficient operations.

key challenges

  • The project was delivered through the COVID-19 pandemic, with works paused at one point due to the Victorian Government’s industry shutdown guidelines.
  • Early soil testing confirmed the presence of contaminated soil onsite. Jaydo worked with South East Water to manage this onsite through bunding and containing this soil along with disposal as per EPA requirements.

Value for Money

  • Jaydo redesigned the sludge lagoon due to unsuitable clay liner identified during construction, this included changing the cur/fill ratio to minimise disposal and import costs for South East Water, saving approximately $200k.

key innovations

  • Jaydo planned the works within the sludge lagoons and lowered each lagoon as required to minimise the risk of overflow.
  • The installation of a new product, called Earthlok, for rock beaching lagoons in a pre-fabricated flexible matting solution saved the requirement for regular maintenance normally required for standard rock beaching.
  • Design and installation of pre-packaged pump station wtihin the embankment to minimise excavation and reduce pipework for inflows.
