Relocation of Water Pump Station & Water Mains at Melton Hwy / Leakes Rd

Relocation of Water Pump Station & Water Mains at Melton Hwy / Leakes Rd

Plumpton, Vic

Project Duration

January to December 2024

Client

Department of Transport and Planning

Project Value

$ 6.9m

Rapid housing growth in Melton has put pressure on local infrastructure, particularly at the Melton Hwy/Leakes Rd intersection. As a result, the Department of Transport and Planning is upgrading the intersection by aligning Leakes Road, adding turning lanes and installing traffic and pedestrian lights.

The road realignment required Greater Western Water to relocate the existing water network assets. Careful planning was required to ensure a reliable water supply was maintained throughout construction. Jaydo was contracted to undertake the upgrade and future-proof the water network. This involved decommissioning and installation of a new water pumping station, a pressure reducing station and pipelines from DN100 to DN500, all of which was integrated to advanced monitoring and control systems.

The service relocation works included the following across PN16, PN20 and PN35 pressure ratings:

  • Decommissioning of existing water pumping station and pressure reducing station (PRS)
  • Design and install of new water pumping station and PRS at new locations
  • Install new flowmeter pit and various MSCL pipelines (OD114, OD257, OD337, OD502, OD559)
    totalling over 1,000 meters
  • Install DN600 RCP sleeved OD502 MSCL and DN375 RCP sleeved OD280 PE & OD257 MSCL
    pipelines
  • Install 350m of OD180 PE WPS inlet pipeline and 410m of OD180 PE WPS outlet pipeline for
    transition
  • Complete temporary pipelines for WPS outlet and OD280 PE pipelines
  • Make multiple main connections to existing DN500 DICL, OD502 MSCL, DN150 PVC, and
    DN100 PVC pipelines
  • Install air valve connections, pipeline hydrants, and systems on PN35 rated pipelines
  • Design and install cathodic protection, pillar box for PRS components, and PRS pump power
    supply cabinet
  • Integrate SCADA for WPS, pressure sensors, PRS pump, and flowmeter for system monitoring
    and control

key challenges

  • Detailed project staging was necessary for the delivery of 8x pipelines and 21x shutdown activities to keep GWW’s network operational
  • Clashing power assets required extensive coordination, including 3x new power supply connections and relocation of overhead powerlines
  • Busy intersection with traffic safety concerns
  • Long lead times for pipe fittings and pumping station equipment

key innovations

  • Road crossings on Melton Hwy and Leakes Rd North were completed during three weekend closures to minimise traffic risk and accelerate the program
  • The decommissioning of the Leakes Rd Pressure Reducing Station minimised traffic impact, accelerated the program, and reduced long-term maintenance costs by avoiding having pipe alignment within the road
  • Effective communication with Powercor ensured timely programming of power connections, disconnections, and service relocations without delays.
  • Alternative fittings and materials, such as Nova Siria PN25 Restrained Couplers and MSCL pipe, were used to avoid delays
  • A hybrid generator was used on site to minimise  environmental impacts

value for money

  • Although this was a construct only job, Jaydo applied the best for project approach providing solutions for the design challenges encountered
  • Flexible programme to accommodate design changes, long lead time items and limited site access for 3 months before restrictions of CEMP were resolved
  • In-house design and installation by Jaydo’s Electrical and Engineering team of the pressure sensors, flow meter, float switch and power supply cabinet for PRS pump reduced costs to the project
  • Extensive collaboration between KBR (designer), GWW, and Jaydo ensured the resolution of 75 RFIs and a  successful execution of 21 shutdown activities all within the clients timeframe to ensure no
    delays to the intersection upgrade
  • Jaydo provided a seamless knowledge transfer for the intersection upgrade for design and contractor information
