As part of the FY22/23 Melbourne Water Desilt Program for Melbourne Water, Jaydo was engaged for the sediment removal within the pond at Kenilworth Avenue. The pond needed to be dewatered and inlet water flows managed, to allow for machinery to enter the pond to remove all built up sediment within them.

Overall, approximately 700 cubes of sediment and vegetation was removed from the sediment pond. Ecologists were on site daily overseeing the desilting works and numerous Dwarf Galaxias observed in the area, a freshwater fish listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under the EPBC Act 1999.

key challenges

  • Strict controls had to be followed when delivering the works, as the area was known to provide habitat to Dwarf Galaxias.
  • There was only one side of the pond that was accessible, and the clay base of the pond was extremely soft causing Jaydo’s machinary to become bogged. To prevent this and to reach the centre of the pond, steel plates were used to create a safe working platform.

Key innovations

  • A diversion channel was constructed to allow for the safe passage of the Dwarf Galaxia, in addition to maintaining downstream flows and habitat.
  • Steel plates were used to access the centre of the pond and to create a safe working platform for our machinary, by preventing them from becoming stuck in the soft clay liner of the sediment ponds.
