Elster Creek Sewer Upgrade

Elster Creek Sewer Upgrade

Bentleigh East & McKinnon, Vic

Project Duration

December 2022 to November 2023

Client

South East Water

Project Value

$ 12m

The Zinfra-Jaydo-WSP (ZJW) Joint Venture was awarded by South East Water to plan, design and successfully deliver two separate new sewer pipelines at Bentleigh East and additional tank 2x storage capacity installation at Mc Kinnon Reserve in Mc Kinnon.

SEW needed to upgrade the capacity of the existing Elster Creek Sewerage Catchment area to facilitate future growth within several south-eastern suburbs and new housing developments in the East Bentleigh area to cater for the extra sewerage requirements.

The scope of works included:

  • Installation of 318m of DN300 and 178m of DN550 gravity sewer GRP jacking pipe (Area 3 – Higgins Rd Pipeline), ranging between 2.5m to 10m in depth with multiple high-risk service crossings and final tie-ins at connection points
  • Installation of 690m of DN300 and 228m of DN550 gravity sewer GRP jacking pipe (Area 2 – Tuckers Rd Pipeline), ranging between 2.5m to 7.5m in depth with multiple high-risk service crossings
  • Install of 2x 160kL emergency relief storage tanks, with each tank measuring at 36m long x 2.4m internal diameter, and 6m underground, within the Tucker Road Pump Station Catchment at McKinnon Reserve, plus final tank fitout and commissioning

key challenges

  • Road and driveway closures for local residents in alignment areas with stakeholder engagement and important focus for the project
  • Excavating shafts for deep sewer install up to 10m with sandy ground to contend with
  • Live overhead powerlines to contend with on every street in alignment areas with strict permit conditions for plant and machinary
  • Daily groundwater management for discharging groundwater and management of the Contamination Management Plan daily

Value for money

  • 2x storage tanks manufactured and installed at reduced costs, achieved by breaking into 3m long sections and laid in trench to 36m in length for both tanks. This reduced the ZJW requirement for a larger work footprint area required at McKinnon Reserve. There were costs savings for SEW achieved here. Note if these tanks were delivered in one section (36m long each) a much larger work footprint would have been required by ZJW to install both tanks at McKinnon Reserve and a large crane would also have been needed.
  • MH H03, Higgins Road, was up to 10m in depth. A 5m x 5m piling shaft was designed, constructed and reinstated safely, with pre and post dilapidation surveys carried out on all adjacent properties due to the depth of this shaft to provide local residents with confidence of our works.
