Project Duration >
August to December 2015
Client >
Melbourne City Council
Project Value >
$ 2.7m
Jaydo was awarded the contract to construct Stage 1 of the Melbourne CBD Drainage Renewal Works as part of the City of Melbourne’s Flood Management Plan. The project involved the installation of an additional drain, in parallel to the existing, to increase the capacity of the local drainage network, to reduce the likelihood of flooding. Due to the heavily populated location of the project, the works were undertaken at night to minimise the disruption to traffic and City of Melbourne stakeholders.
The scope of works included:
- Installation of approximately 300m of DN675 RC Pipeline and associated structures along Collins, King and Spencer Streets
- Works within the vicinity of Melbourne tram lines and the general public
- Traffic management for the works including liaison with impacted stakeholders
- Reconstruction and reinstatement of the road
key challenges
- Working in Melbourne’s CBD has inherent challenges due to tram, vehicle and pedestrian traffic on all sides of the work front. Traffic control was a key factor in the success of the project. Due to the tight confines of the city street, the construction footprint was kept to a minimum. This included utilising parking bays for machinery storage and adjusting methodologies to reduce the area required.
- This area has a complex network of current and abandoned services crisscrossing the roadways. Many older pipes and conduits are shown only on hand drawn service plans, and some are not shown at
all. Service proving was a major activity to ensure the excavation was planned properly. Activities around these services must be planned, considered, and conducted in a careful manner.
Key Outcomes
The project was completed with minimal impact to the CBD community, to the satisfaction of the Melbourne City Council.
